The Water Trifecta Philosophy

water trifectaThe Water Trifecta is an aptly named approach to controlling algae in ponds. Our friends at South Santee Aquaculture coined the term to describe the use of aeration, beneficial bacteria, and ultrasound all in combination to help keep a pond cleaner overall.

This is an extremely powerful approach to dealing with the issue of algae blooms. It's hard to suggest which one of these three tools serves as the baseline of the work, as they all work well individually to help with the cause.

Beneficial bacteria has long been a known remedy for cleaning and balancing ponds, and in it's work, it will lower nutrients in the pond that normally would feed algae growth. It also helps to keep a pond clear of organics since it naturally helps break this debris down into harmless substances that can be used up by other bacteria.

Regardless of a pond's size, bacteria can play an important role in maintaining the health of a water system. Fortunately both aeration and ultrasound work well with bacteria and in fact they actually stimulate it to work better.

It's commonly suggested to use aeration with bacteria since adding oxygen and circulation to the water, which aeration does, can do nothing but help aerobic bacteria work better.

Aeration also helps modulate temperature swings in the pond, regardless of the depth, and really stablizes the overall environment to one that is very healthy for fish and aquatic life.

Ultrasound fits into the mix well because it is the one tool that directly kills algae by damaging it's cellular structure. Since it's precisely targeted so well to algae control, it leaves no residual damage to anything else in the pond and those very vibrations that it uses to damage algae, actually work to stimulate bacteria!

All in all, we're fortunate as pond owners in this day and age. As advancements continue to come along, it's always good to see those that compliment one another and work well together to achieve an ultimate goal.

In terms of the Water Trifecta, it's turning out to be the perfect combination of tools for the control of algae in all types of ponds, and one that can really help in the overall health and well being of a water feature as well.
